Peggy Guggenheim Collection – Palazzo Venier dei Leoni
La mostra offre al pubblico una nuova lettura dell’arte americana ed europea attraverso un confronto tra due momenti artistici, dal secondo dopoguerra fino al 1979. Le opere, provenienti dalla collezione di Peggy Guggenheim e acquisite dalla Collezione dopo la sua scomparsa, alcune delle quali raramente esposte, saranno e accostate tra loro in base a tema, stile, affinità e a una cronologia meno rigida del consueto. L’esposizione mette in scena quella sensibilità che va al di là dei movimenti e delle tendenze artistiche, quello stesso raffinato sentire che Peggy seppe cogliere così bene con la sua attività di collezionista lungimirante e all’avanguardia. È il mondo di Peggy, delle sue opere raccolte o donate alla collezione, che tesse, attraverso 90 tra dipinti, sculture e disegni, una rassegna che offre certezze – i dipinti di De Kooning o Motherwell, di Vedova, Afro o uno splendido Fontana – accanto ad artisti che il mercato oggi non ha ancora alzato tra i suoi eletti ma che – a dirla con il curatore – sono protagonisti della storia dell’arte della seconda metà del secolo scorso.
Il percorso offre inoltre l’opportunità di approfondire l’opera di due artisti della Collezione: Jack Tworkov (1900–1982) e Claire Falkenstein (1908–1997), quest’ultima conosciuta per la creazione del cancello della Collezione Peggy Guggenheim a Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, commissionato nel 1960 da Peggy stessa e che sarà restaurato per la mostra.
This exhibition offers a fresh perspective on American and European art in the period between the end of World War II and 1979. Drawn from the collection of Peggy Guggenheim as well as acquisitions by the Guggenheim Foundation after her death, the works on view—some of which are infrequently showcased—will be grouped and matched based on theme, style, and affinity. The exhibition draws on a sensibility that goes beyond canonical art movements and trends, comparable to the refined approach that Peggy Guggenheim learned and cultivated through her activity as a far-sighted and vanguard collector. This context also offers insight into the work of two artists in the foundation’s collections: Jack Tworkov (1900–82) and Claire Falkenstein (1908–97). Falkenstein is celebrated for her entrance gates to Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, which now houses the Peggy Guggenheim Collection. Peggy Guggenheim commissioned Falkenstein to create the gates in 1960, and the work will undergo conservation in time for this exhibition.
